Kiev
This was another city whose size I was surprised by. Many of the ex-soviet states that I visited had capitals that stretched for a few hundred yards across (some of them struggled to manage even that) but Kiev stretched quite a bit further. I was also surprised to find fully functioning beaches on the banks of the river Dnieper, complete with sunbathing families and deckchairs. I saw lots of development and reconstruction occurring whilst I was in Kiev. Cranes and workmen busy improving and augmenting the city as I watched. This is another city that is beginning to find its identity, rather like the whole of the Ukraine and the ex-communist states in general.
