Serbia
Belgrade
Perhaps a little unfairly, a good proportion of my assessment of any city is the quality of its parks. I see these not as an escape from the hustle and bustle of the streets, but as a sort of reflection of the city itself. When in Belgrade I somehow managed to spend nearly all my time meandering through its parks, and I can certainly testify that these were of a very superior quality. The whole country of Serbia is now trying to escape from the legacy of Slobodan Milosevic who has forever tainted our western impressions of the place. but visit now and you won’t find a militarized, controlling place but a country rapidly embracing the rest of the world. Most of its citizens speak English and Belgrade’s nightlife is beginning to rival many of its other European competitors such as Berlin or London. Speak of Belgrade in a few years time and it’s my bet that it won’t be images of war and oppression that it conjures up but images of a cool cosmopolitan city just finding its feet.
