Warsaw
Poland is the world’s model pupil of how to manage a transition economy. Its move from communism to a capitalist structure has allowed the country to develop in ways not thought possible 20 years previously, and largely without the help of the IMF or World Bank. Aside from the obvious increases in living standards the transition has afforded the Polish people a completely changed way of life and social structure. The city of Warsaw reflects this with the austere constructions of its communist past sitting adjacent to the modern developments funded by international capital. Warsaw does not give the impression of a city that takes it lead from others – it is a truly individual city. Like Poland as a whole, Warsaw makes its own path though history.
