To me Amsterdam seems pretty chilled out. Not stoned – chilled out. The liberal culture in Holland hasn’t just created a city of monged out potheads but has manufactured a general consensus that rushing around isn’t really going to help anybody. Some of the buildings in Amsterdam are truly breathtaking, they seem to stretch up and up and on some of the narrower streets seem to cut out most of the light, but in contrast to these narrower streets are the roads with huge canals running down the centre. These are fairly ubiquitous throughout Amsterdam and it was my greatest fear to fall into one of them. The water seemed so far down, wide and – well imposing. And there where so many it seemed ‘odds on’ I would fall into at least one of them.
