Some of the remains of British rule still litter Valletta – the whole city has an old imperial feel fused with a more Mediterranean laid back ambience. The old cannon battery still looks pretty imposing and the built up walls of the seaward defenses’ look as effective today as they ever did, the stonework and other masonry seems to convey a real sense of solidity and durability. If it wasn’t for the informative signs, I could have believed that they’d been there forever. This all seems in conflict with the people who seem laid back and not particularly confrontational.
