Formed in the breakup of the old Yugoslavia, Macedonia has been a compromise state since the early 90’s. The Greeks still dispute Macedonia’s claim to the name ‘Republic of Macedonia’ and their flag which the Greeks say is rooted to Greek history. Relations are now supposed to have normalized but some animosity doubtlessly remains. Despite this, the people of Macedonia were fantastic. A good time to see them would be on a weekend night as they gather in herds in the central square being entertained by an array of bizarre performances. Skopje is a strange place, though I feel I could have stayed a few more days, in an attempt to witness more of the people’s surreal lifestyles.
