Lithuania
Vilnius
The USSR didn’t seem to be able to spoil Vilnius in the same way that they spoilt may other ex-block countries. In Vilnius there are less of the concrete communist buildings left scattered throughout most of Eastern Europe. Left here instead is a beautifully composed town full of gothic architecture – churches, halls and café’s, all nestled in-between winding cobbled streets. Lithuania was a place where I put up my guard, as I’d heard rumours of it being controlled by the mafia. How wrong could I have been, for it was here where I learnt much about Russian customs from the, non English speaking Russian family which adopted me, from the minute they met me on the train. This was one of the real unexpected gems of my trip.
