Budapest
Of all the ex-communist capitals that I visited Budapest was by far the most unique. The combinations of East/West/Traditional/Contemporary rang true with everything – the architecture the people, the food. Although firmly situated in Eastern Europe it felt like it could be any other cosmopolitan western city. However, some of its character and individually was presented by the fact that it is almost two cities in one. On one side of the Danube, cobbled streets wind up the hill towards the Citadel. On the other side, the streets trace more formal grid patterns, housing the retailing and political centres of Budapest.
