Greece
Athens seemed a very crowded and disorganized city. Taxis, cars and mopeds jostled with each other on the street for room. On the day of my visit it was very hot and the heat seemed to be getting to everyone. Yet I did manage to get out of the hubbub to see some of the reminders of Athens’ past. One of the centres of Europe that shaped western civilization over the past millennia, the ancient Greek structures such as the ‘Parthenon’ inspire awe and give a feeling of personal insignificance. They also give some indication of the violence and savagery of times gone by. Today, Athens seems impossibly dusty in places and people appear to struggle getting anything done. (No doubt a completely unfair judgment). However this is another city looking to the future. The Olympics in 2004 brought the world spotlight on the city, and for the most part Athens did itself proud. Athens is a city of contrast, its past and future co-existing in the present.
