Cyprus
Nicosia
“Europe’s last divided capital”. The divide between Turkish and Greek occupation that runs though the centre of Nicosia isn’t hidden away, Signs and works of art draw the tourist’s attention to this separation. The impression that I gained from this was that the Cypriots still hold great resentment and anger from this occupation. Although a generation has now passed, the photos of those missing still adorns the dividing wall – and information boards advise us of the refusal of Turkish authorities to advise of their whereabouts.
Elsewhere in Nicosia, life continues as normal. Mainly, elderly tourists shuffle along the narrow streets in lines, admiring and commenting on the multitude of trinket, souvenir and confectionery shops. But behind this, great scars of dangerous dilapidated buildings offer some reminder of the resentment and hate that still exists. This juxtaposition of modern tourism industry and growth and the remnant of imperial Europe’s past resonate throughout the city.
