Brussels serves almost as two capitals – the capital of Belgium and also the main nerve centre of the EU. Beurocrats from around Europe congregate in Brussels to conduct their business and make their laws. This seams quite a fitting activity as my immediate impression of Brussels was of a very grey place – the grey of suits compliment it nicely. By that I don’t mean the city is jaded or boring – I mean literally grey. Vast swathes of concrete and paving slabs and road coverings create a kind of grey-scale throughout. Brussels seemed like a very serious place, although thanks to the amiability of some of the Belgium’s I met (and possibly something to do with the dark Belgium beers!) I genuinely enjoyed my time in Brussels.
